Turmeric
(Rhizomes)
Turmeric is one of nature’s most potent herbs. It holds a title of being a very powerful antioxidant and it contains anti-inflammatory properties. Curcumin, the yellow pigment in turmeric, is the active ingredient. It is grown and used all over the world. Turmeric is in fact the main ingredient in curry powder whether it be from Malaysia or Jamaica! It is a very warming herb that reduces mucus in all parts of the body. Turmeric fights free radicals, aids in circulation, lowers cholesterol and improves blood vessel health. It is good for all arthritic conditions. It helps to protect the liver, lungs and intestines. Turmeric has also been shown to help treat and may even prevent cancer. It has been shown to be useful in the treatment of diabetes, hepatitis, diarrhea, psoriasis, eczema, asthma and smoking related lung inflammation.
The little bulbs on the root are called rhizomes. The healing properties of the rhizomes include relieving menstrual cramps and healing pain associated with trauma. Research has shown when placed against aspirin, Turmeric root has a lower side effect profile. Did I mention that it is good for all arthritic conditions? When I learned how to make my own curry powder, I was taught that black pepper brings out the flavor of the turmeric. It doesn’t only bring out the flavor, but it enhances every healing property of the root! If you want to try it out, start with this simple, but delicious recipe for “Golden Milk Tea“. Happy Healing!
